Positive spin-off due to later departure times of cruise ships

March 12, 2012

WILLEMSTAD — Since the Council of Ministers (RvM) reached an agreement on November 24th 2010 to keep the shops and casinos on board cruise ships open after seven PM, the area in and around the Riff Fort has also become livelier in the evening. According to the government, this has created a positive ‘spin-off’ effect.“During the cruise season, the cruise ships moor in the harbor and at the Mega Pier until 10 PM every week. This resulted in a visible spin-off effect for the storekeepers and horeca establishments in and around the Riff Fort area”, according to the press report from the government. The city center – especially the area surrounding the Riff Fort and Renaissance Hotel – has become livelier and therefore more attractive for the local shops and horeca establishments to stay open longer.

“The turnover of local shops and casinos are increasing because of the possibility that cruise tourists will spend more time on the island”, according to the press report.
