Chata gets around the table with organizer of CNSJF

February 28, 2012

WILLEMSTAD — A delegation of interest group Chata will meet with Fundashon Bon Intenshon, the organizer and sponsor of the Curaçao North Sea Jazz Festival (CNSJF) on Monday, March 5th. The parties will then discuss the alleged price rises in the hotel sector during the next festival in September, says Chata-chairwoman Lisa Dindial.Gregory Elias of Fundashon Bon Intenshon and Ghatim Kabbara of Curaçao Tourist Board expressed their concern in their letter to Chata. According to them, the tourism industry is not contributing towards a larger promotion of the island during the festival period. Furthermore, the organization expressed their doubts about the future of the festival. According to Dindial, Chata is giving the letter serious attention.

“The members also have an interest in the success of the festival”, says Dindial. She believes the hotels do not wish to thwart or ruin the festival, as some suggest in the media. “The members have a business to run. Hotel room prices are determined by the offer. We are to study if there’s a question of extreme high prices that could possibly lead to canceling the festival this year. Together with the organization we must see how we can come to terms”, says Dindial.

According to the Chata-chairwoman, it is common on the island but also internationally that guests pay a price tag for wanting to stay at a hotel near a festival location. Those who wish to stay near the WTC will have to pay slightly more. If the prices from the hotels in Piscadera rocket, we will approach the hotels, but as yet, we’ll have to figure this out first, says Dindial. After the festival last year, Chata sounded out their members on how they could contribute toward the success of the jazz festival. Chata is still discussing this with their members. Some members had also come up with ideas such as introducing maximum prices or possibly turning over commissions. These ideas are still under discussion.

The third edition of the CNSJF will take place on August 31st and September 1st. Carlos Santana and Ruben Blades are among the performing artists.
