WILLEMSTAD — The Curaçao aviation authorities have not yet issued a so-called ‘wet lease’ permit for flights with the MD-83 aircraft from Falcon Air to Dutch Antilles Express (DAE). However, a permit was issued for charter flights with the aircraft in question by DAE, says Minister Charles Cooper, entrusted with civil aviation. According to the Minister, this permit is issued when an airline company is coping with aircrafts that are on the ground due to technical problems. However, salient detail is that neither of the two Fokker 100 aircrafts flown by DAE is on the ground. The member of the board of Insel Air Eduard Heerenveen said he was surprised to learn of Minister Cooper’s statements. “None of DAE’s aircrafts are under repair. The ‘Opspec’ (specification of operational components of an airline company with the Curaçao Aviation Authority, (editorial office)) of DAE indicates they are currently operational with two Fokker 100 aircrafts. There are no technical problems; it regards a simple fleet expansion from two to three aircrafts,” said Heerenveen.
As the Amigoe informed earlier, with the arrival of the MD-83 aircraft of the American company Falcon Airline for DAE, Insel Air feels their rights were denied and therefore instituted summary proceedings against the government. With this, the company demands clarity whether since 2006, when Insel Air was forbidden to deploy a foreign company for route expansion, the laws and rules had changed and if this is legal.
Minister Cooper stated on Wednesday that the government has not given DAE a wet lease permit yet. This permit takes time because of the advice procedure through the Directorate of Foreign Relations to Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs and that of the United States. The Curaçao Aviation Authority can issue the permit after receiving this advice. Cooper further explained that the choice was made for an interim solution by issuing DAE a charter permit. This permit was issued on December 14th and is valid up to and including December 24th – with the possibility to renew such. According to the Minister, such permits are issued to companies with aircrafts on the ground due to technical problems.
The MD-83 of Falcon Air – with the colors and designs of Curaçao Tourism Board (CTB) – is operational on the routes Curaçao/St. Maarten/St. Domingo since yesterday.
