WILLEMSTAD — The Association of Curaçao Bakers decided to halt all intended protest actions – on the government not announcing any new prices for bread yet – until after the first week of January, says Edsel Hooker, chairman of the association. According to Hooker, an announcement of new prices for bread now would only be advantageous for the ‘semi-bakeries’ of small toko’s and supermarkets. The association agreed with the Ministry of Economic Development that new prices for bread products would be determined and announced after a thorough inventory of the entire process of baking bread. The inventory includes verifying ingredients to produce various bread types, the quality of the baking process, the professional level of the bakery personnel, etc.
The association believes this thorough inventory would take too long. The Ministry had promised to announce new prices for bread in anticipation of the inventory. However, this announcement remained forthcoming. The association recently received a letter from the Ministry, who requested additional information. After receipt of this information, the Ministry would announce the new prices.
However, the bakers affiliated with the association decided not to protest against this unfulfilled promise from a strategic point of view but to wait until after the first week of January for a possible announcement of new prices for bread. Protest actions will follow if the latter remains forthcoming, says Edsel Hooker of the Curaçao Bakers’ Association.
