Sehos to have decompression chamber again

December 8, 2011

WILLEMSTAD — The Minister of Public Health, Environment and Nature, Jacinta Constancia, and Premier Gerrit Schotte (both of MFK) announced the planned installation of a decompression chamber this morning in the auditorium of the St. Elisabeth Hospital (Sehos). After Constancia’s visit to Venezuela last August, it was decided to adjust the hospital facilities in order to make room for the new ‘donated’ decompression tank, which will arrive on the island after the adjustments have been made. The construction of this facility involves an amount of 300,000 guilders, says Javier Hernandez, chairman of the Directors of the hospital.

The old decompression tank had malfunctioned years ago. “We are very happy with the government’s decision, considering the increased focus on diving tourism. In case of accidents, it’s important that people can be treated in the hospital. In the past, we used equipment from the Navy,” says Hernandez, who emphasizes the importance of this tank. A decompression chamber is not only used after diving accidents but also to treat burns with oxygen. Diabetics also benefit from such treatment when they have problems with their limbs.
